Suzanne Shires Workshop – How to Establish a Wild Food Garden
Learn how to establish a wild food garden from author and homesteader Suzanne Shires. For many, Foraging for food often starts with picking a basket of berries or harvesting dandelion greens for a salad. Then, one by one, we learn new plants and add them to our wild treks. There are nuts, greens, flowers, and fruit, and delicious. These wild food plants are often more nutritious than the domesticated vegetables growing in our gardens.
In this workshop you will learn how to make foraging easier by propagating wild food into your own garden. From trellising wild berries to sowing a patch of edible wild greens, you will discover ways to make foraging easier, and more fun, while taking your food security to the next level.

Who is Suzanne Shires?
Suzanne Shires is a homesteader, author, and master herbalist. As a native of North Carolina, she calls the Blue Ridge her home. Suzanne grew up in a large family with acres of gardens, preserving food as naturally as possible. She began canning with her mother at seven years old and learned sustainability from ‘mountain folk’ grandparents.
Suzanne grew up using a variety of natural remedies found throughout Appalachia. Over the years she began to formally into herbal medicine and nutrition, including foraging for edible plants and remedies. Suzanne regularly practices fermenting, vinegar making, medicine making, and winemaking from the wild plants she gathers and cultivates.
Suzanne’s homestead includes a variety of heirloom vegetables, herb gardens, fruit orchards, fields of herbs, and chickens as well as the wild plants she cultivates among her more domesticated gardens. Join us and learn how you too can cultivate and benefit from wild foods in your own garden.
